In the current knowledge-based economy, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are called to play different interconnected roles related to triple university missions. Alongside the two traditional missions of teaching and research, HEIs have experienced the emergence of the so-called “third mission”, which sees HEIs as knowledge-based agents part of ecosystems of public institutions, companies and citizens oriented to coknowledge creation. In this article, social cohesion is presented in terms of belonging, interdependence, integration, sharing, participation, but also as corresponsibility between the different actors present in a territory. The promotion of social cohesion, therefore, essentially has to do with educational interventions aimed at social inclusion. Compared to the more traditional interventions on social emergencies, supporting social cohesion means in fact enhancing relations between members of society and promoting the common good through the collective assumption of responsibility. The role of the school is crucial in this, but also of lifelong learning, therefore the Third Mission of Universities.

Universities face a tension from two urgent pressures they face, firstly to demonstrate that they deliver value for society in return for public investments, and secondly to demonstrate their responsibility by introducing strategic management to demonstrate to their funders that they meet their goals. In this special issue, we explore the ways in which these tensions play out in practice, as universities facing 'mission overload' in turn try to develop additional regional development missions, highlighting three findings.
